One Medicare, the Leeds based primary care services provider, has officially launched its Hilton Road surgery in Chapeltown and were delighted to have Yorkshire cricket star Andrew Gale on hand to cut the ribbon. The surgery offered the local community free health screenings as part of the launch event, and held a cricket tea to make our special guest feel at home.

As part of the celebrations the local community raised money for Take Heart, a charity dedicated to providing comfort and care for patients and their families at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in the General Infirmary, St. James Hospital and all its units within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The practice team and members of One Medicare's Board were available to meet with patients and local community groups, introduce them to the company and highlight the benefits to the practice following the takeover of services from Leeds PCT.

One Medicare was awarded the contract for the practice following a competitive tender process. Prior to this Hilton Road Surgery had been run directly by Leeds PCT since April 2004, after the amalgamation of two existing practice lists.

To support the transferred practice staff, One Medicare has employed a new clinical team, with Dr Tessa Mattam, Dr Kay Brennan and Dr Sundeep Soin assisted by two Nurse Practitioners, a Practice Nurse and dedicated Health Care Support Worker. The combination of old and new will offer patients a smooth transition, whilst enhancing the services that can be offered at the surgery.

One Medicare @ Hilton Road will offer a range of services, including a bi-monthly diabetes clinic, providing traditional secondary care management and advice. The team will ensure that they meet the needs of the diverse population, the majority of whom do not have English as a first language, and speak a range of local dialects, including Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali. They understand the intricate needs of the community, providing interpretation and chaperone services for patients as required, and identifying particular health and social care needs.

Dr Phillip Earnshaw, Chief Executive Officer, One Medicare, commented: "We are very excited about working with the community around Hilton Road, and are focussing on establishing close links with local groups and community leaders.

"Working closely with Leeds PCT we will develop the services offered at the practice and provide a fully integrated primary care service. We also aim to reach out to the large number of local residents who are not registered with an NHS practice, making them feel welcome and offering the ability to communicate effectively with the medical staff."

In addition to One Medicare @ Hilton Road, the company also runs One Medicare @ The Light, the first NHS doctor's surgery in Leeds city centre. Drs Earnshaw and Wynn, directors of One Medicare, under a separate contract with Leeds PCT, are responsible for Parkside Surgery, in Beeston, Leeds.
